Tanzania

Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire

2022

Key takeaway: The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Highlight: Getting to see and learn about all the animals that I'd only seen on Planet Earth or in David Attenborough documentaries. Zebra and Wildebeest, for example, migrate together. The wildebeest eat the shorter grass and the zebra the tallest grass. The zebra have great long distance eyesight and can spot predators while the wildebeest have a highly developed sense of smell and lead the zebra to water. Everything in the Serengeti is perfectly evolved.

Lowlight: Not showering for 7 days is absolutely devastating, but after day 4 or 5 you really do feel like you can go forever without one.

Favorite food: Probably one of the few countries in the world where there was quite literally no food highlight for me. The meals on Kili were fantastic for what they were, but even when we came down and embarked on the Safari there was no traditional Tanzanian dish that got me going. I stopped eating breakfast AND lunch (unheard of for me) about halfway through the trip and did cigarettes and coffee instead.

Fun fact: Tanzanite is 1000x more rare than diamonds. Currently, the only known source is a 4km area of land under two hills near Kilimanjaro.
