Key takeaway: Natural disaster prediction is still so poor. The 2018 Fuego eruption killed almost 200 people. Seismologists called for evacuations just 8 hours before.
Highlight: Cresting a small hill about halfway through the hike and seeing Fuego erupt for the first time. Unlike anything I'd ever witnessed before and I've been on top of countless mountains, including active volcanoes. Unlike Baker though, Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and blows its top roughly every 15 to 20 minutes. We were blessed to get up close and personal, by the nearest saddle, and it was insanity.
Lowlight: A few of the boys didn't make it up the summit due to altitude sickness, but that's life!
Favorite food: Banging tostadas @ Quilto in Guatemala City. Can't go wrong with the classics.
Fun fact: A hobbit-themed amusement park called Hobbitenango, no bullshit, is located about 30 minutes North of Antigua Guatemala. Filled with hobbit holes, a tire swing, LOTR themed food/drinks, I never would have guessed that that existed.
